Emmy believes that hard work is important and that education is one of the things that you cannot have taken away from you. She recently earned her Broker’s license and has her ABR, SRES, GRI, AHWD & Commitment to Excellence (C2EX) designations. She was also named to the inaugural Dotloop® Top 10 Most Tech-Savvy Agents worldwide. Emmy continues to pursue new designations as often as she can, because she believes that, as Oscar Wilde famously said, “you can never be overdressed or overeducated.” Emmy never fails to inspire us or make us laugh, and her clients agree!

Mary has deep roots in the Auburn community. Her love of houses, landscaping, and design led her to the Real Estate profession. She happily works with clients to find their dream home in her special hometown community. She is knowledgeable of all the developments in the Auburn/Opelika area and has become an expert in downtown housing. Give Back in October: Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Lee County

Boys & Girls Club 5th Graders Construction Camp

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Lee County has been meeting the needs of area youth for over 25 years through support programs run by a dedicated team. Three Sixty REALTORS® Emmy Martin Sorrells and Bob Harris both serve on the organization’s board.

At 74 I’m trying to give back more than I take. I love seeing how this organization makes a real difference in kids’ lives.

The Boys & Girls Club is currently serving over 550 children and teens each year (nearly 200 each day!). The organization’s mission is “to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.”

Programs for Area Youth

The organization offers various programs in addition to daily after-school activities. The after-school program offers children a place to go after school where they receive accountability to academic goals and schoolwork, tutoring, and even guidance on nutrition and caring for themselves. Emmy is particularly impressed by the Smart Girls Program! This program, done in conjunction with the Junior League, empowers young women to embrace their intelligence, learn leadership skills, and excel in life. 

It is truly an honor to be part of this organization! I love seeing these girls learning to use their hands to create! It’s fulfilling to see them to realize that they could make a career out of that.

Last summer, in conjunction with Professional Women in Building and the Auburn High School building construction teacher, the Boys & Girls Club offered a construction camp to all 5th graders. One child who attended felt such a sense of accomplishment of creating something with his own hands! His principal reports that he is having a wonderful start to this school year!

Bob and Emmy report that finances are a challenge for the organization, as their funding relies on donations. While annual fundraising events do help, there are times each year when donations wane. Then the staff must prioritize spending in order to meet the needs of the children they are committed to serve.

In May, Nonet Reese and I attended the Women’s Council of REALTORS® Conference in Washington, D.C. This mid-year WCR meeting is held in conjunction with the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) legislative meetings. At this conference, we send voting delegates to elect our national officers who lead WCR on a national level.

About the Women’s Council of REALTORS® (WCR)

WCR is a network of successful REALTORS® with a mission to advance women as business leaders in the industry and in the communities they serve. In 1938, women were barred from many local real estate associations, so a “women’s division” was formed, creating the Women’s Council of REALTORS®. Over the decades, vast numbers of women have chosen to work in real estate. There is a considerable benefit to women from the flexible work schedule and the ability to earn pay equitable to men’s in a commission-based field. Today, the council remains a leader for the industry.

WCR provides award-winning business leadership programs. The organization also hosts two annual national conferences in May and November. The Women’s Council of REALTORS® Conference is always one of my favorite professional conferences to attend. I am inspired to see the work REALTORS® do with our elected officials.

Janeese has had 30 years of experience coaching, training, and consulting organizational teams in Alabama, Florida and Georgia. Janeese speaks frequently on empowering leaders to take powerful next steps to increase their leadership edge. She believes that when organizations invest in their leaders and employees by providing development opportunities, the entire organization benefits.  She is passionate about teaching, equipping and coaching individuals to reach their full potential professionally and personally.

Janeese spoke on “The Power of Choice,” and that the choices we make affect how we approach the future. Lead from a place of rest and reflection over exhaustion. Choose a growth mindset over a limited mindset. Choose perseverance over quitting. Be consistently positive over negativity. Choose connection over competition. We especially loved her comment to “choose courageous over perfect.”

Outstanding Woman in Business Award

This year’s Outstanding Woman in Business is former Mayor Jan Dempsey. Sarah Brown was on hand to introduce this amazing woman who has had a visionary impact on Auburn.

Growth and new challenges in Auburn in the 1970s led to a hunger for political change. Jan Dempsey bet that she could make a difference. While the idea of a female mayor was a novelty at the time, she quickly gained respect for her no-nonsense approach and ability to get things done. All this while raising three children and running a successful retail business, The Back Porch, on the corner of Gay and Magnolia.

It is inspiring to see more than 200 strong business women supporting each other and celebrating women who have made such an impact on Auburn. Jan Dempsey’s commitment to this town revolutionized and moved it forward to the amazing place we enjoy living and serving in today. She is a true hero!

Professional Women in Building: Making a Difference for Women

Three Sixty is proud to be involved with the new chapter of the Professional Women in Building (PWB)!

Formed in January 2019, the council is an affiliate of the Lee County Home Builders Association and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). As a female-owned business, we believe it is important to promote the interests of women in the building trades. While women constitute more than half of the U.S. workforce, they represent only 9% of the labor in the construction industry.

We may not see fruit during our time, but nothing will ever change if we don’t start now. We’re in it for the long haul – it’s not going to change overnight because we’re looking for a cultural shift.

Until recently, there was no local chapter of the PWB. That changed when Lisa Campfield, Co-owner and Design Director of builder Homeworks of Alabama, pitched the idea of a Lee County chapter to several of her colleagues in the industry. We were thrilled that Lisa reached out to Three Sixty co-founders Tricia Young and Nonet Reese, broker Elizabeth Rose, and REALTOR® Emmy Martin Sorrells.  Emmy Martin Sorrells serves as the vice president.

I am proud to serve as Vice President for this inaugural year. I think it’s important in our industry to support and encourage women to enter the trade field in all aspects of construction.

Starting Strong

The chapter is already working with our local school system to promote industry awareness and education among young women. We have partnered with Jessica Bowlin, an Auburn University Building Science grad who teaches Architecture and Construction at Auburn High School. Jessica came on board to operate the education subcommittee and will be running a summer camp and other educational projects.

Construction leaders must help overcome the outdated perceptions that our industry is necessarily male focused. Lisa is leading that charge in our local community and I was thrilled and honored that she asked me to join her.

The Lee County chapter meets monthly with a mission to empower women in the building industry. The group offers networking, education, legislative awareness, and personal development opportunities. Our focus is to support women in all fields related to building, including construction, building trades, real estate, brokerage, and land development.

We place great value on education and giving back to the community. Involvement in PWB offers a perfect opportunity to expand our expertise and promote young people to enter careers that are vital to our entire industry.

Opportunities to Learn from Local Leaders

The most recent meeting, which we hosted at our East Alabama office, was a presentation from Eloise Stewart of Eloise Design Company. This local company offers branding and career counseling services to students, and creative design, branding and event services to entrepreneurs. The talk focused on personal branding and design services.

I enjoyed sharing with this group of women and I hope I encouraged them. They brought up great discussion points on building up reputations and finding the correct social media presence for their business.

The 3rd Annual Alabama Residential Real Estate Conference & Expo (ACREres) took place in Birmingham last month. ACREres is presented by the Alabama Center for Real Estate (ACRE). The organization provides research on economic and sales data for the state. Three Sixty Co-founder Nonet Reese has long served on ACRE’s Leadership Council.

Focused on Team Development

We encourage each of our team members to make professional growth a top priority. We know that helps to grow our company also! ACREres provides a full day of educational seminars about the real estate market in Alabama. In addition, the event provides networking opportunities for attendees and a vendor expo. Nonet knows the event is a great experience and she decided to bring Emmy Martin Sorrells and Nancy Carlton Bendinger to join her.

I am focused on networking opportunities for our team, so I was happy to bring Emmy and Nancy to ACREres. Plus, I knew that we would have a lot of fun!

To say the day was jam packed is an understatement! ACREres Speakers included experts from the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) as well as many other industry leaders. Topics were wide ranging, and sessions included detailed information about local, state and national trends in the industry. Our team felt that two afternoon sessions stood out with some especially useful information.

Sustainability and Green Housing

“Smart, Simple, Sustainable – What Today’s Buyers Want” was led by Amanda Stinton, Director of Leadership and Sustainability for NAR. Amanda discussed the increased demand for comfortable living spaces with reduced energy costs, and how this trend is changing the real estate industry.

My clients ask about green housing topics often. I learned so much at ACREres, and I am thrilled to have information to share from one of NAR’s national experts.

Alabama Real Estate Market Data

“The State of Alabama Real Estate” panel discussion reviewed and discussed data from 2018 and projections for 2019. The speakers were Stuart Norton, an ACRE Research Coordinator, and Glenn Phillips, CEO of Lake Homes Realty, one of the country’s fastest growing real estate companies. We were happy to see positive numbers for the Auburn-Opelika area, and also that the projections for the state of Alabama are solid. This is due in large part to companies such as Airbus, Amazon, Toyota-Mazda, and Mercedes that are planning to expand their investment in the state in the next couple of years.

It was exciting to see year-end numbers for the state. I was happy to see that the Auburn-Opelika area had the highest median construction sales price out of all of the metro areas!

Three Sixty learned a long time ago that a team that works AND plays together stays together. After the business of the day concluded, Nonet, Emmy and Nancy went to dinner to relax and talk about the ACREres experience. They agreed that it was well worth their time! Also, they can’t wait to share what they learned with the rest of the Three Sixty team and with clients.
