The Auburn Wesley Foundation, a student ministry outreach next door to Auburn United Methodist Church, had acquired a substantial amount of furniture and accessories over the years. While the pieces were comfortable and very lived in, the overall space had no cohesive design story. With a limited budget courtesy of a very generous donor, the Foundation reached out to lifeSTYLED for an upgrade, a facelift, and a fresh look.
There was a lot of clean-up to do. Our job was to help the client declutter and give all of the rooms a general airing out. Sarah felt her role here was essentially to give the Foundation a different perspective – sometimes you get so used to living in a certain way that you can’t see it any other way! With fresh paint on the walls, including blue accent walls and removal of heavy curtains throughout, we let the light and the outside into the space.
The Fireside Room received the biggest transformation, and the students have been loving it! Now with a cozy and clean feel, the room is perfect for congregating, studying and hanging out. Students also frequently have bible studies in this room at the marble topped tables.
The Entry needed new seating. With a new arrangement that encourages conversation and small groups, we created a much more inviting space. Work continued upstairs in the study room, where we eliminated old couches and broken chairs and added new furniture.
A small addition with a huge impact is the signage we installed at the front doors. This building has always seemed closed up, and removal of the curtains helped tremendously, but we felt it was important to communicate about the activities offered here. We added vinyl lettering announcing service times and additional information to welcome the student community. In addition to making this change outside, we felt strongly that there was an opportunity to communicate to the students inside the building. We added signage on three walls inside the building with the circle logo and words, “Missions – Outreach – Worship – Fellowship – Discipleship”, to remind students of the mission of the Foundation.
We have received so much positive feedback from the students who use the building and the community at large that these relatively simple changes have made a huge difference in making the facility feel more inviting and lively. We are thrilled that we were able to help the Foundation!
